AMAZING SIGHTS OF MAHON at MENORCA

MAÓ or Mahón, as the locals would call it, is the capital of this island of Menorca. Its inhabitants are courteous, making it a respectable town resort as tourists come flocking in.

Its architecture is a strange combination of classic Georgian town houses and apartment blocks that rise high as the skies. It is basically a harbor town with cafes and restaurants splattered around its port catering to the tourists who arrive.

Sights of Mahon

Although the island is not so small that you can walk everywhere, it is still best to discover the island on foot. There are ancient mansions in this beautiful island resort that allow you to explore its beauty in a day. You will find that the ferry terminal is uniquely set underneath the cliff which holds the city wall remnants that gives way to a wide stoned stairway leading on to four concise shopping areas.

The Plaça Espanya provides a direct bay and port view with a local fish market that was established in 1927. The Plaça Carme square houses a Carmelite church that has its covered passage lined with food stalls and a supermarket at its basement, whereas the Plaça Constitució houses Santa María, the town church that was founded by Alfonso III in 1287 as a celebration of the Re-Conquest’s victory on the island. Having been remodeled several times, the church holds a pleasant architecture with a high altar and huge Baroque excesses that reaches the roof with spiral columns. The pride and joy of this building is its monumental woodwork organ that was build in 1810 with its trumpeting angel figurines and pipes which were built in Austria before being transported from Europe during the Napoleonic wars. Next to this church is an 18th century British sponsored monument with an impressive façade clock; a gift from the first British governor to the islanders.

Historical Sights

Another church, the Sant Francesc, has a Baroque façade of light golden stones on its round arched doorway of Romanesque style. This church was built over 2 centuries – 17th and 18th – as the town was burned down by Barbarossa in the year 1535. It still has the original pink tint in its stones with unique spiral motives on its pillars.

Up at the north, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is brightly lit with garlanded vine as well as rose plants around this octagonal structure. There is also a chapel and some monastic buildings which house the island’s best and largest museum, the Museu de Menorca. This museum displays prehistoric artifacts from Neolithic settlers since 4,000 BC, to displays from the Talayotic era.

A 5 minute walk to the town will take you to the main square lined with flowerbeds and some fountain pieces. Outside of town there is a taula, which is one of the biggest and well preserved T-shaped monoliths that this island has to offer. This taula is placed at the center of a round compound encircled by remnants of round and wide buildings which were excavated by the Cambridge University archeologist team in the latter years of 1920s; but until today, no one could figure out how the structure was constructed.
Laying close by are two talayots which are cone shaped with one larger than the other; the latter being not accessible. The larger talayot has been reconstructed slightly as the French invasion in 1781 has modified its width to cater to mounting their firearms.

Interesting Historical Ronda

The city of Ronda is situated in the midst of the spectacular angular mountains, which loom around it in dark contrast, adding on the full drama of nature in its natural beauty. Ronda is built on the edge of the mountains with El Tajo, a river gorge that is wide and alluring, splitting the city. El Tajo can be condescending with its 130 meters drop from 3 of its sides. Yet, looking resplendent and spectacular is the 18th century bridge, Puente Nuevo that is arched with tall white houses standing precariously from the sierra’s edge.

Ronda’s Attractions

Most of Ronda’s attractions are from the mountains and valleys, where a stroll along Río Guadalévin using the donkey trails across the lush valley greens will unveil nature’s spectacular beauty at its best.

This is also a favorite haunt for avid bird watchers who might catch a look on the lesser kestrels, which may nest or fly from these cliffs. Crag martins can also be spotted if one is lucky for the day.

Ronda town is an attraction sight which offers much historical character and story as day trips become a favorite with locals and tourists from nearby Costa del Sol.

Ronda Town

Ronda is divided into the northwest, central and southern sections; the northwest is usually where the newer section of Ronda lies known as the Mercadillo quarter. Crossing a bridge to the center is Ciudad, which is an ancient Moorish town. At the south is the suburb of San Francisco.

Ciudad, a Moorish set up, has retained many of its architecture in the existing houses with a few distinguished Renaissance buildings. The locations of these buildings are in such an amazing labyrinth that one can only wander about randomly and still be able to view the architecture.

Across the bridge will lead you to an 18th century building that is a Moorish mansion. Only the gardens are opened to the public at the moment which showcases an incredible underground stairway called the Mina. This 365-step stairway leads to the river and was cut and built by 14th century Christian slaves. The river is the town’s water supply source in times of war.

Attractions

An incredible mansion from the Renaissance era, the Palacio del Marqués, presents a rather awkward and ancient image of Adam and Eve, which has been placed on top of its portal. There are other interesting architectural buildings and monuments of unique shapes and structures on the southeast of the river, as well as the Roman baths from the 13th century.

There is the magnificent cathedral Santa María, which was an Arabic mosque that held prayers on Fridays, but now has been converted to the town’s cathedral. It displays a fine blend of different cultures such as the Moors, Goths, and Renaissance, with a belfry on the minaret top.

There is visible Arabic calligraphy on the arches of the cathedral as well as an ancient Arab mihrab which is a Muslim prayer niche. Further west, one will see the Casa de Mondragón, which was a Moorish palace once upon a time. Its interior is magnificent, beholding original stuccowork on its patio with a stupendous carved ceiling. It also functions as a museum which showcases the history of Moorish Ronda and its local archeology.

EXCITING PAMPLONA

Pamplona has long established its presence as a significant meeting point between Castilia and France. But the famous writer, Ernest Hemingway put it on the map when he described Pamplona with its bulls running wild in his book ‘The Sun Also Rises’.

Pamplona is Navarre’s capital which holds a wide diversity in culture, cuisine and architecture, combining the influences of its past inhabitants, the Goths, Franks, and Moors.

Attractions

Pamplona’s main attraction is its St. Fermin Festival which is held every July and has attracted famous personalities like Hemingway, as well as adventure seekers from every nation. Thousands flock to the town’s streets to watch dozens of bulls released out of the corrals to run through a cordoned path to reach the designated bull ring. There, these bulls confront the professional matadors for a challenge later. Many old and wise folks watch from a distance while the thrill seekers are drawn near to the perimeters, unfazed by the dangers of these half-ton beasts wildly running in the streets, bumping into anything or anyone in their way. Hence, it is no surprise that injuries are common every year with some undesired deaths, like the one where an American youth, the 13th fatal runner since 1924, was gored to death in 1995.

These dangers and risks also serve to increase the adrenalin of many bold youth while tourists prefer to watch from the safety of the sidelines and to enjoy the festivity through drinks, dance, music and firework displays. An interesting wood chopping contest is also held in the eight-day celebration.

At other times of the year, you can still enjoy Pamplona on its tree-lined plaza located at the town center and the splendid cathedral that is of French-Gothic design in its interior. Many have come both far and near to appreciate the beautiful cloisters that are unparallel in its sculptural work. Such are the ancient walls and artifacts from the Roman era which are showcased in Navarre Museum.

Accommodations

There are many interesting options to stay at Pamplona; from great-valued modern hotels to highly rated ones, all of which are well situated in the city central for the visitor’s convenient exploration of the city. These hotels offer the basic amenities, such as swimming pools, golf courses, conference halls and pleasant rooms that will make your stay comfortable as you explore the city in the day.

These places to stay usually have their own restaurants which offer a wide selection of local cuisines to the delight of the visitors. One can enjoy authentic Spanish fare with a toast of the fine wine that is renowned in this region.

QUAINT VILLAGE OF MIJAS at Costa del Sol

Mijas Pueblo or the village of Mijas is without a doubt, a star Jewel of Costa del Sol. It is nestled at the Sierra de Mijas foothills, about 450 meters above the sea level and offering spectacular natural landscapes over the town of Fuengirola as well as the Mediterranean coast and sea.

Mijas is known to be a traditional mountain village that is very Andalucian in style, with narrow streets that are cobbled and buildings painted white.

Mijas is visited by many tourists, especially at peak seasons with many coaches and excursions by both local and regional tourism companies.

Attractions at Mijas

It is always a pleasure to walk around this fascinating village in Andalusia. Some of the popular attractions here include a small bullring that is quadrangular in shape and forms the oldest bullrings in Spain - the Virgen de la Pena sanctuary that was built in the 17th century and the la Concepción sanctuary of 16th century.

A good place for a stroll is along the old wall and the gardens which lead to the open auditorium which hosts many cultural events during various times of the year. An interesting feature of this village is the unique donkey-driven taxis that go around the town center and the village outskirts.

Location of Mijas

This quaint village has about 10,000 inhabitants although its actual area spans more widely than the Mijas municipality; stretching from Benalmadena (on its east), to Fuengirola (south end), Marbella (west side), to Alhaurin and Coin (north side) all around. It is also considered as one of the richest areas in Spain.

There are further small districts around Mijas known as subdivisions such as Las Lagunas, La Cala, Sitio de Calahonda as well as Riviera del Sol. Most of these are pretty villages that offer soft beaches of clean sand which have become an increasingly popular tourist spot, as well as a residential preference for many expatriates in Spain as it offers many private beaches.

Golf Activity
Mijas boasts of the best and largest selection of golf courses along the Costa del Sol region, with as many as 12 top quality golf courses available to all golfing enthusiasts at whatever level.

There are also golf complexes that are huge, making your holiday at Costal del Sol enlightening; enjoying the old and the new. Thus, visiting Mijas is a must if you were to come back to this part of Spain. If not, it would be like dropping by Paris without setting eyes on the Eiffel Tower.

DISCOVERING CAZALLA

CAZALLA DE LA SIERRA is located north of Sevilla in the province of Andalucia. Cazalla is quite a metropolitan city with its great offering of facilities; the place dates back to the Romans who gave it the name, Callentum. The Moors came and changed its name to Kazalla, which means ‘fortified city’.

Overview

The highlight of this city is the Nuestra Señora Church at the town’s southern part, which reflects the blend of cultural architecture from the 14th century to the Renaissance era in the 18th century.

Many worthy sights are accessible by walking as they are near to one another, such as the 18th century Ermita del Monte Church on the east side of town and 5 kilometers away on a forest hill overlooking the Rivera de Huesna.

There is a simple tourist center which provides basic information about the region, but does not have town maps, which can be obtained at the ayuntamiento, just 5 minute’s walk away.

There are a few hostel accommodations splattered around the region, but the best is La Milagrosa, located on the main road.

Amenities

Bars and restaurants abound with plenty of good food at decent prices. There is even a casino that serves simple hearty meals for a refreshing and relaxing moment, like a local club, with a nominal fee for monthly membership. Visitors and tourists in Cazalla are welcome to enjoy the facilities without charge, but this is an attractive offering since a membership offers drinks at discounted prices.

Cazalla has very efficient public transport with regular buses plying the route to Sevilla on a daily basis. Buses operate in the morning to reach Estación de Cazalla y Constantina for those who wish to catch a train to Extremadura or Zafra or any other connecting town in the region, although a walk to some nearby stops is more satisfying with the breathtaking view of the great river and the varied flora and fauna around the valley. The spectacular walk takes about 5 hours.

Although there are many stays available here, the best in Cazalla is the romantic Palacio de San Benito. This majestic palace hotel was formerly an Andalusian hermitage in the countryside. It has been duly renovated while retaining its many original features and is wonderfully decorated with art pieces and unique antiques. The colonnaded patio and fountain are still pieced with tiles from the 16th century. It also boasts a splendidly furnished library with a gallery covered in Brussels-origin tapestries. The hotel’s restaurant offers an excellent setting for a fine dining experience.

The Resort of Playa de las Americas at Tenerife

The Playa de las Americas shoreline was once a splattered rocky coastline that enjoys an average of 320 days of fun in the sun every year. This condition alone made this place a popular destination for sunbathers. It is located at the south portion of Tenerife Island.

Except for Los Cristianos, an ancient harbor, many places here have been rebuilt in the past 30 years to turn this arid land into the potential economic town it currently is. A lot of work was done on this place from piped water and desalination plants with the Sahara desert sand and concrete breakwaters shipped in to form the lovely beach it has today.

Shore Beauty

The beaches are the main attraction of most visitors who spend a lot of time there, as the breakwaters provide a safe haven for swimming. Water sports are played, from jet skis, pedal boats, motorboats and paragliding or just a tow on the inflated banana boat. There are a few local dive services which offer scuba diving.

But aside from these hectic resort life activities, there are quiet spots on the island which one can enjoy at a slower pace, such as the animal park of Parques Exóticas and a banana farm that is very educational on the local fruit. The animal park is quite an imaginative park for anyone who would like a slow walk through of the place to enjoy the simple sights as they pass the time here on the island.

Other Attractions

A number of top quality hotels here help boost the town’s rating of a resort as well as the town’s finances which are meant to woo the more wealthy tourists. There is the Torviscas which has a British prominence that has become a popular family resort, and a recently developed yachting marina called Puerto Colon.

Another place to stay is the resort of Fañabé which is still being developed with many other hotels in the same area. The most impressive hotel on the island is the luxurious Gran Hotel Melia, which is located in the north end of the area.

More high-class hotels are currently being built to cater to the growing number of tourists that come to this island. These new developments are located at the south of Las Américas, quite close to the borders of Los Cristianos, causing very little space to stretch; although these are located at the lesser crowd beaches.

Another luxurious hotel at this area is the resort of Mare Nostrum which is a 5-star hotel that has been set up to offer a local atmosphere on this island.

Places of tourist interest in Spain – Madrid

Madrid, the capital city of Spain, does not need any introduction. It is also called the ‘most touristic city’ of Spain. Enchantingly beautiful nature, historic buildings and parks and many examples of modern architecture, museums etc. keep the tourist busy and mesmerized. The visitor will enjoy every moment of his tour in Madrid. Some tour operators advise tourists that it would take about a week to visit all the places of interest in Madrid. The beautifully laid out Madrid city has added glamour.

A tour of the city:

Many symphony concerts and tournaments are held in this plaza, which was used earlier for bullfighting. This is one of the busiest places in Madrid.

Tourists say that Spain is the leader for tourism in Europe. Now, people from other parts of the world are also visiting Spain. The beautiful beaches, high mountains, very beautiful gardens, national parks, ancient churches and other monumental buildings, and above all the hospitable people of Spain, have made this country the most ideal destination for tourists.

When we speak of beaches, one of the names commonly heard of is the La Concha Beach in San Sebastian. Actually San Sebastian was formerly a small fishing village where people hunted whales and cod. The village’s history dates back to the period of Napoleon. During those days the port in La Concha was engaged in trading in wines and oil to England, France etc. Now, this small fishing village has transformed itself into a major tourist spot.

What is unique in La Concha?

The amazingly beautiful nature around the beach is not found anywhere else in Europe and is a welcome sign for tourists. It is also the most ideal place for those who are fascinated by bird watching. The beach also has a mountain range nearby. Tourists can trek up to the top of the mountain to see the most splendid view of the sea and of the surrounding countryside. A variety of water sports is available for people of all ages.

The vast area just at the foot of the mountain is rich in vegetation and the Government of Spain has declared this area a National Park. The thick forest area has walking paths for the pleasure of tourists.

The La Concha Beach also offers mosques and churches. According to historical records, the mosques were built centuries ago by the Moors. There is a church believed to have been built over the existing mosque. These mosques and the church receive many tourists every year.

The ancient village is located in the centre of the island and is one of the most beautiful villages of Spain. Elche - The City of Palm Trees

This city in the Valencian community, Elche is recognized to be the third largest populated city; it is in the forefront for tourism. The city’s history according to available records is traced back to the 6th century BC. Since then the city has been greatly influenced by various civilizations, such as the Romans, Moors, Arabs and Christians.

Elche is known for its beautiful landscape and vast area of land where palm trees are grown. Apart from this vast area, tourists visiting Elche will find many other places of interest like the Saint Mary’s Basilica and the fortress believed to have been built in the 7th century. The city can be reached by air using the Alicanta airport and it is very well connected by road as well. There are many luxury villas and apartments that welcome tourists who will enjoy a very comfortable stay.

People with religious faith consider St. Mary’s Basilica as a most sacred place. This historic basilica, built centuries ago, is believed to have been built over a mosque. The other great asset of Elche is the palm forest covering over 430 hectares, with more than 200,000 palm trees. No other place in Europe has such a huge area under palm cultivation. The river Vinalopo has helped the growth of vegetation and the palm forest. Tourists always make it a point to visit the Priest’s garden, called Huerto del Cura in the Spanish language. The tourist will see some of the rarest species of palms in this garden. They are bleached and also used for many attractive handicrafts. Best beaches of Spain - Ses Illetes, Formentera

Spain has a long sea coast of over 220 kms off the Mediterranean Sea. This long sea coast has thousands of beaches. Balearic Island is a group of islands located in the west of Spain. This archipelago can be called a necklace of diamonds. Among these precious islands, Ses Illetes in Formentera is in the forefront.

Formentera is one of the small islands of the Balearic group and is in the south of Spain. Located at the farther corner, it does not receive many visitors. Those who visit Forementera can only reach the island by ferry from Ibiza. The Ses Illetes is one of the most popular beaches of Forementera Island. This unimaginably beautiful beach certainly deserves to be crowned the ‘queen’ of the Balearic Islands.

The beach remains unspoiled because there is little or no human intervention in the ecological system here. The Government of Spain has taken care to preserve the natural beauty and has taken pains to keep the beach immaculately clean. The crystal clear sea water invites the tourist to jump in. Varieties of water sports are available for tourists. The beautiful white sand on the endless blue horizon of the Mediterranean Sea is something to be seen rather than explained. The other important beaches of Formentera Island include Cala Savina, Es Calo, Platja de Llevant, Es Pujols and Cala Saona.

What is unique about Forementera Island?

One unique thing about this island is clear white sand of the beach. At the other corner of the beach the tourist will find rocky cliffs. There are tall mountains and, at the other end, the ravines, which are quite deep. At the foot of the mountain are the tall palm trees. The primitive nature on this island surrounded by the white sand of the beach can rarely be found on any other islands. Those who want to go to the mainland can hire cars, motor bikes or bicycles.

Sports facility available:

Apart from the water and beach sports, visitors can enjoy jet skiing, wind surfing, tennis etc. Of course there are other sporting activities like cycling, trekking, walking etc.

Board and lodging:

There are many luxury hotels and villas known for their hospitality and mouth watering cuisines. Self catering villas are also available. Although Forementera Island does not receive too many tourists, they are advised to book their accommodation in advance. Be certain that if you miss Ses Illetes, you will have missed something very beautiful.

SIGHTS, FOOD and STAY at CAZORLA

CAZORLA was well known for its function as the outpost during the Andalucian Re-Conquest battles. It still has two ancient castles of Moorish origin standing to attest the battles, but they were redesigned and restored during the Christian Re-Conquest. Today, Cazorla is the base for many visits around this area of beautiful river gorges and refreshing forests.

Set-up

Cazorla is located in the province of Jaen and has three major squares. The main square connects to the second one, which is egg-shaped. The heart of the city’s administration is located in the splendid Moorish-design palace at the end of Plaza de la Corredera. Its third square, Plaza Santa Maria, is the most festive one along the labyrinth of narrow streets. Cazorla is a busy commercial base for tourists who wish to visit this region, taking in beautiful natural landscapes as well as the surrounding ancient sites. There is a privately operated tourist center which offers tourist information, as well as 4-wheeled drives around the region and horse-riding in the park.

Historical Attractions

An ancient cathedral, the Santa Maria Cathedral, was damaged by floods before being burnt by Napoleonic soldiers. Its preserved ruins and open square have been turned into an amphitheatre that is currently used as a meeting site or to hold concerts and other local happenings.

There is the La Yedra, which is a somber castle tower that has been reconstructed to house the town museum displaying ancient local utensils and home furniture.

Accommodation

Places to stay are plentiful here for one’s choosing. Hotels as old as 30 years, like the Hotel Guadalquivir, are popular with their traditional style and design located strategically near interesting places to visit in Cazorla. Hotel Guadalquivir offers an impressive landscape with the national park surrounding it. It also offers tasty local cuisine for one’s appetite.

Most hotels in Cazorla offer a beautiful scenic view with modern amenities, such as Wi-Fi. The hotels here are also peaceful and eco-friendly. An interesting one - the Hotel Sierra de Cazorla - is renowned for initiating the use of olive seed bio-fuel in its spa for heating its warm water.  Olive oil is generously used in the hotel’s massages and spa treatments as it is said to have refreshing properties.

Gastronomy

There are many tapas bars that offer local fares for one’s taste buds. These can be found near Plaza Santa María where the local specialty is authentic local cuisine prepared on a wood fire using the rabbit. Other places further away serve platos combinados, as well as a decently priced menu, or you may opt for the up-market selection at La Sarga, which serves regional dishes.

Denia – the most beautiful town in Spain

It is a fact; this tiny city of Dania is stunningly beautiful. The tourist will certainly love its beautiful beaches, spectacular environment, luxurious villas in which to stay and mouth watering recipes by the experienced chefs in hotels around the city. ‘It is a wonderful experience’ exclaim the tourists! Just visit this city and you will also certainly agree.

The vast beaches in Spain are popular and extraordinarily equipped for the most modern water sports. Safety has been given the highest importance; so even children and the elderly can enjoy and play in the crystal clear sea water. Wide walking paths, adequate provision for swimming, boating and beach sports like volley ball, tennis etc help the tourist to enjoy his stay here. The hotels located on the beach serve the most delicious food. Denia is also one of the important harbors where many trading activities take place. Although it is a busy port, places have been reserved for the tourist to enjoy and swim in the sea water.

Denia is not only popular for its beaches. It is equally popular for some of its places of tourist interest like the Denia Castle, Open Air theatre etc. The Denia Castle, for example, speaks of the architectural excellence of those who built it. The Castle has three towers; historians believe the castle and the towers were used as a place to keep watch on the movement of the enemy and the pirates. The fort built around the castle was intended to prevent the pirates and other enemies from entering the city. The fort wall was wide enough for the soldiers to move around with arms and ammunition. Most parts of the castle have been preserved even to this day.

Another place of attraction in Denia is the Open Air Theatre, which is now being used to give public performances. The Open Air Theatre can accommodate about 40,000 people. According to historians, this theatre was built by the Romans.  It is now being used for cultural functions.

Those who are fascinated by exploration should visit the Montgo Nature Reserve. This nature reserve attracts the largest number of visitors to natural reserves in Spain.  It is about one hour’s drive from Denia. The Montgo Nature Reserve has plenty of amenities for tourists like hotels, bars, walking paths etc.

All tourists will certainly enjoy every minute of their stay in Spain and go home with cherished memories of their trip.

Another interesting aspect of traveling in Spain is that every city and village has many things to offer to the tourist. Take for example, the tiny village of Alora, located near the famous province of Malaga. This tiny village is recognized as one of the best tourist spots in Spain. The tourists will certainly agree that there is something interesting in every part of this tiny village.

Take for example the Chapel called ‘lady of flower’, built in the 16th century, which houses the image of the ‘virgin of flowers’. This Chapel in Alora receives a large number of tourists every year. The visitor will be amazed by this stunningly beautiful chapel. Apart from being one of the most attractive monumental structures, the Chapel is also a pilgrimage centre of Europe.

The other popular place to visit in Alora is the Church of the ‘lady of incarnation’, also popular as Parish Church. This is one of the biggest churches of Malaga. The church is also popular as an outstanding example of masterly architecture. The interior of the church bears some of the best works of sculpture. The church is located in the midst of a beautifully laid out garden.

The Arab castle is another place of tourist interest in Alora. In fact, historians say this castle was actually built by Romans. Historians say that the Castle was built to protect the city from enemies. The fort has some watch towers located at certain strategic locations. This well crafted castle attracts a large number of tourists every year.

The Guadalhorce Valley is another place of interest. This valley is also popular for its beautiful natural beauty; it is rich in vegetation and is also the home of many wild animals. The Government of Spain has harnessed this beautiful environment and has transformed this valley rich in vegetation; now it has become a tourist attraction.

VALENCIA

A Beautiful Valencia

Valencia, the oranges’ kingdom and the Levant Queen, is a  city that has a serrated coast with hills and huerta in the interior, and plains of which it is said have the most fertile land in Europe. However, the region doesn’t stand out through the landscape. The agriculture is very modern; you can admire the endless orange, lemon and peach orchards and the rice groves here. If you want to taste it, the rice will be served to you in different types: paella, which is found everywhere, and is a close relative of the italian risotto.

The City of Valencia

Valencia is the third city in Spain in terms of dimension. Although Valencia is not a very attractive city at a first view, the sunny climate, excellent restaurants, exciting night life, and the changes that have appeared in the city with the organization of the American Cup in 2007 and 2009 transformed it into a very dynamic city.

The city’s monuments are illuminated once the night sets in, so the atmosphere created is very special. The history of Valencia spreads from the Greeks to the Romans, and in the year 714, the Arabs. These cultures have influenced the aspect, the traditions, and the customs of the city, creating a very special place where tourists can relax and find out a lot of things related to Spain and its history.

Sightseeing in Valencia

When you go to Valencia, you need a lot of energy because there are many places that are worth visiting. The journey into the history and the culture of the city can start with a visit to the Palau de la Musica y Congresos. The building has a glass facade and it hosts a congress center designed in 1977 by Norman Foster.

In the center of the old city you’ll find the Gothic Cathedral. The main attraction of the cathedral is the Capilla del Santo Caliz, another cathedral( a smaller one), having an alabaster altar that impresses tourists. The Baroque Santa Catalina church, the Palacio Benicarlo, and the Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas should also be on your sightseeing list.

Accommodations

Hotels are at every step in Valencia, but so are private villas. Tourists should choose villas instead of the rigid hotels, because they are more private, they are always decorated in a very traditional style and they are always situated in very picturesque places that offer you wonderful views. Enjoy your stay!

THE HORREO ROUTE

Starting The Journey

The Horreo route starts in Santiago de Compostela and ends in Cabo Fisterra. The route takes you on the galician coast of the Atantic Ocean and it impresses the tourists with the spectacular views that are so characteristic to this isolated part of Spain. The route will take you from rural zones to desolated beaches where tourists can privately go to sunbathe or meditate. The landscape is characterized by the big number of horreos, which are cereal silos having pointing roofs. They are now not functional, but the locals kept them, because they all fight to keep their traditions and their customs alive. If you wish to embark on such a journey, go to Santiago de Compostela. This should be your departure point.

Once you visit Santiago de Compostela, follow the signs to Noia, then turn right at the roundabout. When you are in Bertamirans, turn right in order to drive through the pine and eucalyptus forest. The terrain is full of charming hamlets, cereal silos and land shows. The road will take you to the industrial town of Cee and after three more kilometers you will get to Corcubion. Corcubion is a wonderful fishing village. The houses in Corcubion are decorated with blazons and balconies decorated with ceramics.

Continuing The Road

Follow the indicators to Fisterra, which is just fourteen kilometers away from Corcubion. The route will avoid a cliff that offers the eye an unbelievable view through the pines towards the Atlantic Ocean. While you are here, make a stop to the Santa Maria des Areas Church, built in the XIIth century. The special thing about this church is the beautiful statue of Jesus having a golden beard. Leaving Corcubion and Cee for Muros, you will be directed through the Ezaro estuary that will take you to the O Pindo beach; a sensational beach that will definetely make you stop for a walk on the delicate, white sand.

The End of The Route

Muros will be followed by a network of picturesque streets that will take you to Santa Maria de Campo, a small city that combines the Romanesque and the Gothic styles that nourish the soul and please the eye of tourists. From Muros, go back to Noia. Noia will impress you with the beautiful Romanesque Santa Maria a Nova church, built in 1327 and hosting a collection of over three hundred grave stones dating back to the Xth century. The road can be described as a trip back to the history of Spain, a trip that will make you love this country.

GREAT CHOICE FOR FAMILY VACATIONS at El PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA

EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA is a favorite family holiday destination for the locals as well as for foreigners; namely the gaditanos who are Cadiz’s inhabitants, and the sevillanos who built their chalets and villas on the Playa Puntillo which may be a bit out of the town but is accessible by foot or bus within 15 minutes.

There are many choices of friendly beach bars that one can drink cheaply with food of your own. The numerous sherry bodegas prove to be the main attractions here, flanking the town streets and river banks with their long and white warehouses.

Transportation

In the past, all sherry shipments came through the town of Santa Maria from Jerez, until Cadiz had its own train service. Since then, the town port has less activity as the mode of shipment is diverted. Today, many firms take advantage of the region’s sherry supply to offer tourists free tastings of the wine and tours of the bodegas, which some require advanced bookings.

There is a tourist center, or turismo, in Cádiz which can offer tour information to assist the tourists. The best tours are offered by the town’s biggest wine producers, Osborne y Cía and Fernando de Terry, which is housed in a splendid 17th century convent that has been restructured.

Another type of transportation here is the ferry service which the locals call El Vapor, after the steamboats. The ferry proves to be a faster and cheaper mode of travel compared to the bus. Besides the ferry, there is also the catamaran service which is quite recent in its operations but operates 7 times every day and is half as long as the ferry trip in terms of duration. The price is higher for it though, of course.

Local buses are available to take tourists to their preferred sights, which one can obtain further information about from the turismo. There is another tourist center at El Puerto which is situated near the town's plaza, Galeras Reales, just at the ferry dock.

Gastronomy

There are quite a few seafood restaurants that can whip up some excellent seafood dishes around this area. Some of the more renowned eateries include Romerijo, which offers not only great food but also some fun as it is renowned as the town’s favorite marisquerías. This is a common local snack where you enjoy your selected shellfish in a paper funnel, known as cartucho in Spanish. It is normally enjoyed with a beer, seated on a terrace while watching the world go by.

THE NORTH WEST OF SPAIN

An Attractive Region

Right between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sierra you will find Galicia, Asturia and Cantabria. Santiago de Compostela represents the main attraction of the region, but this is not the only reason why you should visit this part of Spain. The cave paintings, the medieval churches, and the delicious food based on seafood, they all form the north west of Spain. After you visit this part of the country, an image will remain imprinted on your mind: a clam shell. They are everywhere: on the plates, on the boards that indicate you the direction towards the most important pilgrimage place in Spain; Santiago de Compostela. Santiago means ”Saint Jacob,” and the pilgrims who visit the altar adopted the clam shell as their symbol.

Changes in Time

For many pilgrims from the past, a big part of this region was inaccessible because of a spectacular mountain chain. This mountain chain, the Cordillera Cantabrica, is now the reason why so many tourists choose the north west of Spain as their holiday destination - the landscapes are simply breathtaking. You will also be amazed by the picturesque apple orchards, by the green valleys and by the delicious cuisine that is making a rapid progress. The cider, not the wine, is the popular drink and the cheese offesr contain a lot of forms and flavors.

Places to Visit

A Coruna (or La Coruna), was the capital of Galicia. The ”crystal city” is worth visiting for its monuments. Plaza de Maria Pita, with its arcades, was named after a local heroine who saved the city from an English invasion in 1589. A side of the square is dominated by Palacio Municipal, a building that also hosts a small Clocks’ Museum. Santiago de Compostela is the jewel of the region. Santiago de Compostela has attracted pilgrims from all the corners of Europe for over a millenium now. The city is famous for its churches and monasteries; the Cathedral rises between four different squares, and the Gelmirez Palace, the former metropolitan palace, is now a space designated to exhibitions. Santiago de Compostela has a lot more to offer: the San Paio de Antealtares Monastery, the Museo de Arte Sacro (the Saint Arts Museum), and the Museo de las Peregrinaciones (the Pilgrims’ Museum). The region is absolutely charming, so if you want to visit Spain, consider going in the north west of the country. It will be a pleasant experience that will make your holiday a very relaxing one.

THE HOLY WEEK IN SPAIN

SPAIN is one of the largest countries in the south of Europe. Its capital is a very nice city, where the historical buldings and places seem to be in a continous fight with the modern ones. The capital’s name is Madrid. Being Catholic, the people in Spain are very religious and are church-goers. Like in other countries, there are few national holidays but there are many religious holidays.

CHRISTMAS, LESS IMPORTANT?

Although there are many traditions that represent Christmas in Spain,  this holiday is not the most important one for the Spanish people.  It seems that ”The holy week” takes a higher place in the heart of Spaniards. The entire week, from Palm Sunday up to Easter Sunday is a long demonstration of mourning. For the Catholic people, this is a week marked by numerous parades and processions permeated by a deep religious feeling. People in Spain wait for this so called ”Holy Week,” displaying boundless enthusiasm. Of all the countries in the Catholic community, Spain seems to most enjoy this period.

EACH REGION WITH ITS CUSTOMS

Andaluzia, being formed by provinces like Malaga, Sevilla, Cordoba, or Granada, is said to be one of the regions that have best preserved the traditions regarding this religious holiday. In any village from Andaluzia you can meet nocturnal processions, or in the sun you can see the crowd of villiagers holding palm leaves in front of the revered statue of Jesus Christ. The focus is represented by the so called ”pasos,” on which are placed very realistic figures in theatrical photos - although in some places of the country, this week culminates with the burning ceremony of the effigy of Judas.

In Malaga, this tradition dates back since before the XVth and XVIth centuries. The streets are crossed by crowds of people admiring the beautifully decorated statues, works of various monk fraternities. The air is fragrant from the flower perfume, and the entire town looks as if it is dressed in gold and shine. Everything, starting with the atmosphere, the excitement and finishing with the art and passion of the creators of beauty and the faith help people to create a magnificent atmosphere - an unforgettable one. With all these, having so many regions, Spain also has a large variety of customs, especially in what concerns this period of the year.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE IN SPAIN DURING ”THE HOLY WEEK?”

In one of his writings during his journies, Jan Morris said that ”there are few shows on earth that look like this saint’s parades in Spain, during the ’Holy Week’.” You should pay attention to this, and reserve some of your time to go and visit Spain before and during the Easter holiday.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SEVILLA

Sevilla, The Capital of Southern Spain

Sevilla is the financial, cultural and artistic capital of southern Spain. The city is very old, and there are vestiges that show the fact that Sevilla has been built more than 2,ooo years ago. Some of these vestiges can still be seen in the historical center of the city. When visiting Sevilla, you will come into direct contact with medieval, Baroque, Renaissance, and Arab influences, because many cultures have made their presence felt in this part of the country.

Casa de Pilatos

An itinerary in Seville should include the Casa de Pilatos. This is an impressive example of Mudejar architecture, built in the 15th and the 16th century by the Tarifa marquis. It was mistakenly thought that it is a replica of Pilat’s villa in Pont, so this is where its name comes from. The building is an extraordinary combination of marble flooring, artesonado ceilings and ceramic tiles with Roman sculptures decorating the building and the gardens. It is a place where you can relax; listening to the sound of the fountains, especially in the hot summer days.

Hospital de la Caridad and Monasterio de la Cartuja

The Caridad Hospital is a beautiful monument to visit in Sevilla. In 1625, Miguel de Manara decided to build the hospital and the cathedral. They are both wonderful examples of Baroque architecture. Inside the church tourists can admire a few paintings belonging to Murillo and Valdes Leal. Leave the Hospital de la Caridad for the Cartuja Monastery. The Mudejar building, which once used to be visited by every monk that entered Sevilla, is now a place that hosts art galeries. It is a very special place for those who love art of any type.

Museo del Baile Flamenco

Flamenco is the passionate traditional dance in Spain. Tourists appreciate the representations given in restaurants and on the streets, but few know that the dance has a museum of its own. Costumes, projections, photographs, paintings, and musical pieces of the unique rhythms and voices create an evocative universe.

Museo de Bellas Artes

Last but not least, visit the Fine Arts Museum (Museo de Bellas Artes). It was originally a monastery, but in 1841 the building was transformed into a museum. Collections belonging to Francisco Pacheco, Diego Velasquez and Alonso Cano can be admired here by the ones who love the work of the great artists that Spain used to have, and still does. Enjoy Sevilla!!
